Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are lanes of bars the size of a lift, most of them with a regulars-only rule and a seating charge nobody explains in English. A guide gets you through the noren, orders the first round and tells you when it is time to move on.

Almost every door asks for photo ID whatever your age, and a photo of your passport is not it. Clubs at the end of the night turn away trainers, shorts and vests. And a crawl advertised as five bars sometimes means four bars and a shot counter, which is worth reading before you book.

The Ruin Bars
In the old Jewish quarter, landlords let bar owners open in condemned buildings on the condition that nothing was fixed. Szimpla Kert filled the shell of a flat with dentist chairs, a gutted Trabant and a hundred hanging plants, and half the district followed. They are still courtyards with the roof missing, which is why they are magnificent in July and a mistake in February.

The Golden Gai Lane
Six alleys of two-storey shacks survived the developers, and each shack holds a bar with five or six stools and a master who chose the records.
